Pearls

Before the 20th century, the only means of obtaining pearls was by manually gathering of pearl oysters from the ocean floor. That time and before the oil, the inhabitants of the Gulf coast depended on diving for pearls for their livelihoods. Free-divers were forced to descent to depths of over 100 feet on a single breath exposing them to several dangers.
